Often, you'll see macaw cages that are round in shape. Bar spacing is important. The bars must be spaced closely enough together so that the parrot can not stick its head between the bars and become trapped. Because of the shape of a parrot's head and mandibles (jaws), it is quite easy for a parrot to get its head outside the bars and then be unable to pull its head back into the cage. It can quite easily hurt itself or even break its neck in panic once it realizes it has become trapped.

Bar diameter is another important point to consider. Large parrots need large diameter bars for their cages. Smaller parrots can live safely in cages with smaller bars. You'll also want to shop for parrot stands that are easy to clean. This is especially true if you own a large parrot. You do not want to purchase a parrot stand that will require you to cut special paper to fit the tray or other place that "poop" falls while the bird uses the stand. It is crucial to change toys periodically to keep things interesting for your parrot.
