Macaw Cages

Monday, May 14th, 2007

If you want to become owned by a macaw, you'll need to provide a macaw cage for your parrot to call home. Every parrot, regardless of species, needs a cage as a safe place to sleep, providing less area to guard during the darkness. The cage also provides parrots a safe haven when you must be away from the house so they do not get into danger. This is especially true of big parrots like macaws. Cages are where the parrot will go to locate food, to play, and frequently to nap. When you are home to supervise, the door can be opened and the parrot will go into its cage when it isn't in a playful mood, coming out when it wants to interact with people.

Parrot Care Advice
The Secrets Every Parrot Owner Must Know.

Macaw cages are study parrot cages with large diameter bars that are widely spaced compared to cages for smaller species. Even the small Hahn's Macaw has a beak and head large enough to easily be safe with bars spaced 1 inch apart. Your goal is to select a cage that does not permit the parrot to stick its head through the bars and become trapped or to trap its wings in the bars. The bar diameter must be large enough that the parrot can not break the bars loose at the weld point, ruining the cage's structure.

Often, you'll see macaw cages that are round in shape. While some people like this shape cage, others find it particularly difficult to properly secure perches, dishes, and bottom tray coverings and you might want to consider a rectangular or square shape instead. Make certain the macaw cage is tall enough for the long tail feathers to have plenty of room so they will not become ragged as the parrot climbs up and down inside the cage. It should be sufficiently wide that the wings of the bird can be fully extended without touching either side of the cage, as a bare minimum. When purchasing cages, for macaws or any species, buy the largest quality cage you can afford. Bigger really is better when it comes to cages for macaws and other parrots.

There should be a large opening in the cage for the macaw to enter and exit the cage. Macaws, even the smaller species, are big parrots and they will not be happy coming and going through a cramped opening. Many macaw cages have a large door to allow access and a smaller door inside this door for access to food and water containers. A good cage choice is one that has food and water door openings, and the more access doors, the better, because you'll want a place to serve fresh fruits and vegetables, treats and other human foods.

Powder coated macaw cages provide long years of wear. Stainless steel cages are another good choice. Most painted cages can be damaged by the strong macaw beak over time. Because macaw cages are a hefty investment, you want to spend your dollars wisely so you will not need to replace the cage soon.

Parrot Behavior

Monday, May 14th, 2007

Parrot behavior is the subject of a great deal of study and research. Just as parrots in the wild have a social structure and behaviors that communicate their feelings, desires, and moods, companion parrots use behaviors to communicate their needs to their human flocks. You simply have to learn how to read parrot behavior to "speak parrot".

Parrot Care Advice
The Secrets Every Parrot Owner Must Know.

A large part of a parrot's behavior has to do with taking care of its physical needs each day. The parrot will wake up about the time daylight begins and, with short naps along the way, continue its day until darkness. Many parrots adjust this pattern because of artificial lighting, but parrots need quite a bit of sleep time to be healthy. During waking hours that are not spent interacting with the human flock, a parrot will spend time eating and grooming. A great deal of time is spent each day preening feathers so that every feather is in perfect condition. Play is another parrot behavior you'll see daily.

If you have a companion parrot in your home, you may notice that your parrot eats when it sees humans eating. This parrot behavior is because in the wild parrots eat as a flock frequently. Your parrot will probably love it if you include it in mealtimes, serving some healthy human foods to the bird and introducing new foods at this time. It is much more likely to try new foods when it sees its favorite humans eating them.

Generally, a parrot makes noise in the mornings shortly after waking and during the late afternoon. This is the parrot's way of saying it is glad to be alive. It can also be a means of attempting to attract a mate and you may hear special sounds that are indicative of sexual calls.

A parrot behavior that simply can't be changed is the fact that every parrot that is a companion parrot will make contact calls with its humans from time to time. Your parrot can be expected to call to you when you return home after being away for any length of time, from a few minutes to a few hours. It is telling you how happy it is to see you return. Some parrots also call when their humans leave them. It is not normal for a happy, healthy parrot to scream all the time, however. This can result from boredom, lack of attention, improper training or socialization, behavioral problems due to improper hand feeding or weaning, or illness.

Another parrot behavior that can't and shouldn't be changed is the desire to chew on wood and engage in other forms of play with its beak. Parrots in the wild chew wood to wear down their beaks, to create nesting cavities in trees, and as a form of play. Do not expect to teach a parrot not to chew on its toy. In fact, this parrot behavior should be encouraged because busy beaks are happy beaks.

If you notice your parrot's behavior changes significantly suddenly, you should watch closely to be sure your parrot is not ill. A parrot that stops playing, grooming, interacting with humans, eating, or begins to sleep an abnormal amount is probably ill and medical attention must be sought quickly to ensure the illness is treated before the parrot becomes so ill it can not be saved.

Parrot behavior is a complex issue and many books have been written on this subject. If you watch your parrot closely, you'll begin to understand the meaning of the parrot behaviors it exhibits. You'll understand your parrot much more if you watch behaviors, keeping in mind what has just occurred that elicited the action on the parrot's part.

Parrot Cages

Monday, May 14th, 2007

Choosing from the many parrot cages to find the one that is just right for your feathered friend can be quite a task. There are so many models, sizes, shapes, and styles available. So, what should you look for in a parrot cage so your bird will be comfortable and happy and feel safe inside its home?

Parrot Care Advice
The Secrets Every Parrot Owner Must Know.

There is a general rule of thumb that must be used in choosing parrot cages. The minimum size cage to be considered must be large enough so that the parrot can fully extend both wings without touching either side of the cage. It must be large enough that the parrot has room to climb up and down and jump from perch to perch. Keep in mind that, when thinking of parrot cages, bigger is always better. Purchase the largest cage you can afford with bar size and spacing suitable for the specific species of parrot you own. You can apply this rule to parrots from the small budgie to the huge macaws and cockatoos.

Bar spacing is important. The bars must be spaced closely enough together so that the parrot can not stick its head between the bars and become trapped. Because of the shape of a parrot's head and mandibles (jaws), it is quite easy for a parrot to get its head outside the bars and then be unable to pull its head back into the cage. It can quite easily hurt itself or even break its neck in panic once it realizes it has become trapped.

Bar diameter is another important point to consider. Large parrots need large diameter bars for their cages. Smaller parrots can live safely in cages with smaller bars. Parrots have beaks that are amazingly strong. A big bird can easily break the bars of a parrot cage that does not have large enough diameter bars quickly and create a safety hazard or escape. A cockatiel cage, if used for a stronger conure, can quickly lose bars because the bird will work and work to break them loose at the weld points.

You want to choose a parrot cage that feels safe and cozy to your parrot. Generally speaking, parrots do not like round cages. Round cages are also more difficult to find perches that fit well, harder to clean. It is difficult to cover the debris tray in the bottom unless you custom cut paper for it. It is better to select a square or rectangular cage for your bird.

Do not select a cage that does not have at least two openings for food and water dishes. If you can locate on with four doors for food, that is even better. If you have a bird that remove its food and water dishes, slinging them around and making a mess, you can purchase clips or special dishes that prevent this activity.

Choose a parrot cage that has a large entry/exit door. Some cages have small doors inside larger doors. These are great choices for medium sized parrots. Be sure the entry door is large enough for your bird to enter and exit easily.

A bottom grate in the parrot cage that prevents the parrot from getting into dropped food that may have become contaminated is important. A slide-out debris tray is crucial so you can easily keep the parrot cage sanitary and neat.

Choose your parrot cage carefully. Then place lots of parrot toys and perches in the right size for your bird and your feathered friend will have a happy home all its own.

Parrot Stands

Monday, May 14th, 2007

A parrot stand is a great way to allow your bird to spent time away from its cage and near your activities. While your parrot probably goes about the house with you on your shoulder, sometimes this is not convenient, yet you do not wish to place the parrot back into its cage, limiting its out-of-cage time. The parrot play stand is the perfect solution. Parrot stands that are made in a T-stand configuration are commonly used during training sessions, also.

Parrot Care Advice
The Secrets Every Parrot Owner Must Know.

You'll want to select your parrot's stand based on the size parrot you own. A large parrot, of course, requires a large, sturdy stand while a small parrot can enjoy a much smaller stand. When shopping for a parrot stand, select one that has a perch or perches that are the right size for your species of parrot.

You'll also want to shop for parrot stands that are easy to clean. This is especially true if you own a large parrot. You do not want to purchase a parrot stand that will require you to cut special paper to fit the tray or other place that "poop" falls while the bird uses the stand. Too often, stands with almost no lip around the tray result in the buyers being very dissatisfied because they can't use absorbent material in the bottom. Choose a stand that is square or round with one pole coming up from the bottom so you do not have to create a complex cut-out paper to fit or that has an edge around the tray deep enough to confine any material you wish to use as absorbent material in the bottom.

If you do not wish to purchase parrot stands, you can make them at home easily enough. If you have good carpentry skills, access to tools and untreated wood, you can create quite a fancy stand. However, if you do not have these skills, there's still an inexpensive, simple solution. You can locate a bucket, trash case or other type of container for the bottom of the stand that will stand on the floor. Then, locate a bird-safe tree limb, choosing based on the size your parrot would feel most comfortable using. Clean the limb, without removing any bark, with soap and water or water and bit of chlorine bleach. Rinse very well and allow the wood to dry. For parakeet-sized stands, you can probably dry the limb in a slow oven (175 degrees) for about one-half to one hour. Partial fill the container with clean carpenter's sand which can be purchased at any hardware store. Insert the limb into the sand and fill the rest of the way to near the top of the container. If you have a large, heavy bird, instead of beginning with sand, place some concrete made for home repairs in the bottom of the bucket or container, placing the limb into this wet mixture and allowing it to dry completely, then filling the rest of the way with sand.

Parrot Toys

Monday, May 14th, 2007

Busy beaks and busy brains make happy, healthy, well-adjusted parrots. There is nothing as sad as seeing a parrot in a cage with no parrot toys, or even with only one toy to entertain itself. Parrot toys are crucial to your parrot's mental health.

Parrot Care Advice
The Secrets Every Parrot Owner Must Know.

While your parrot should not be confined to its cage all the time, there are periods in almost any day when you do have to place your parrot in its cage. Even when the cage door is opened and the parrot can come and go at will, it will not be on your shoulder every minute. This means the bird needs something to do with its time. That's where a supply of interesting, fun toys becomes so important.

It is crucial to change toys periodically to keep things interesting for your parrot. While you may want to leave the one or two toys that are most loved by your bird available at all times, have a selection of other toys on hand and change one toy every week. The parrot will treat the toy as if it were brand new, even if it was in the cage or on the play area a month or two ago. As toys become worn or chewed up, replace them with new ones, discarding the worn out toys.

Parrot toys do not have to be extremely expensive, and if you are on a budget you can even make some for your parrot. You'll probably purchase at least some of the toys for your bird. Whether you make toys or buy them, you need to follow some simple guidelines to be sure the parrot toys are safe and will really entertain your parrot for hours.

You must look at toys from the point of view that the size must match the size of your parrot. If you have a budgie, a great big toy meant for a macaw will only intimidate the little bird and it will not be enjoyed. A much smaller version of that same toy may become the budgie's favorite. A toy meant for a medium sized bird, when given to a macaw, will be destroyed in only hours or even minutes. So, base your purchasing and crafting decisions on the size parrot you own.

Look at any toys you consider purchasing with a very critical eye. Are they any parts the parrot could easily remove and ingest? Are these parts that could puncture the bird's skin or beak? Are there hazards such as being able to become trapped by the toy or have toes entangled? If the toy contains a chain, are the links of the chain welded closed to prevent toes from becoming caught or beaks from getting trapped? Is the toy made of quality materials? If a bell is included on the toy, is the clapper inside made of a bird-safe material? If the toy passes all these test questions, then you should consider purchasing it. If there is any doubt about the safety of any parrot toy, do not buy that one because there are hundreds from which to choose.

Many birds love shiny parrot toys. A simple shiny stainless steel chain containing some colorful wood parts can be quite appealing to your parrot. A shiny bell can become a well-loved toy that is used as a hat, a "snuggle companion" as well as something with which to create noise. Puzzle toys are very popular with large parrots because they provide mental challenges.

Parrots need to chew on wood in order to keep their beaks healthy. In the wild, adult parrots chew holes in trees for nesting cavities. This instinct remains active even when they do not have a mate in captivity. That urge to chew on wood is strong and should not be discouraged. Provide plenty of toys that contain wood to chew. You can create a parrot toy for a small bird with Popsicle sticks and plastic beads strung on a plastic cord. A medium parrot toy can be created from scraps of untreated wood drilled with holes to string on a stainless steel chain. A large parrot toy can be created from large pieces of untreated wood or clean tree limbs, drilled and strung on a large stainless steel chain. Of course, all these toys can also be purchased easily in various sizes and designs.

Provide lots of parrot toys and your parrot will be happy, mentally healthy, less likely to pluck feathers, and will enjoy hours of fun and play.
